A private appendicitis ultrasound is a non-invasive scan used to examine the appendix and surrounding abdominal area when appendicitis is suspected. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images and does not involve radiation.
The scan may help identify signs of an inflamed appendix or other abnormalities that could be contributing to abdominal pain.
An ultrasound may be recommended if you have symptoms such as:
The scan can assess the appearance of the appendix and look for signs of inflammation or fluid around it. If appendicitis is not treated quickly, your appendix can burst. If this happens your pain may suddenly get better for a short time. You'll then usually have severe pain that spreads to the whole of your abdomen. It may be very painful to move.
Where possible, we recommend not eating for around 4–6 hours before your scan, as this can help improve the ultrasound images. However, if you have significant or worsening symptoms, do not delay seeking urgent medical attention because you have eaten.
You may drink small amounts of clear fluid unless advised otherwise. If you have diabetes or need regular medication or food, please contact us before fasting.
A full bladder is not normally required for an appendicitis ultrasound.
What Happens During the Scan?
You will lie comfortably on an examination couch while the sonographer gently moves an ultrasound probe over your abdomen using a small amount of gel. Some pressure may be applied to the tender area
The scan is usually straightforward and takes approximately 20 minutes, depending on the findings.
Important Information
An ultrasound cannot always visualise the appendix and a normal or inconclusive scan does not completely rule out appendicitis. If symptoms are severe or worsening, urgent medical assessment is important.
