What this scan covers

This scan may be recommended to investigate:

  • Upper or lower abdominal pain (including right-sided pain)
  • Suspected appendicitis
  • Gallstones or gallbladder disease
  • Liver abnormalities or abnormal liver function tests
  • Pancreatic or splenic conditions
  • Kidney pain, stones or urinary tract concerns
  • Blood in the urine or recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Abdominal swelling or a palpable lump
  • Follow-up of previously identified abdominal abnormalities

How to Prepare for Your Scan

Do not eat for 6 hours before your appointment (small sips of water are allowed).
Drink about 1 litre of water approximately 1 hour before the scan and do not empty your bladder until the examination is complete. Continue taking your regular medications unless advised otherwise by your healthcare professional.
This preparation ensures the gallbladder is adequately distended for assessment while the bladder is full to allow optimal visualisation of the urinary tract and appendix where possible.

This scan is carried out by a senior female sonographer. If you would prefer a male practitioner, please let us know at the time of booking so we can arrange this for you.
